    GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of improving how often and how favorably a brand is cited inside AI-generated answers across platforms like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity — the generative-search equivalent of traditional SEO.

Where SEO measures success by ranking position, GEO measures success by citation: does the AI model reference your brand, your data, or your framing when it answers a relevant question. This includes both direct citations (a linked source) and unlinked brand mentions inside the generated text itself.

GEO tactics include building genuinely original data or frameworks (AI models favor unique information over repeated summaries), strong structured data and entity markup, consistent brand facts across the web (NAP, social profiles, knowledge panels), and content that answers questions comprehensively enough that a model doesn't need to synthesize from five other sources.
